When vegetables are just as good as eating Meat!!

Greeting to you all.

Today's blog concerns veggie alternatives to meat. I listed below a recipe I recently made: Shepherd's Pie. I've list below the recipe I found online. But, here I summarize some of the ingredient changes that I made.

Eating healthy meals without consuming meat can be a challenge for most people and families. Growing up in America ,we are taught that protein is meat based, but there are alternatives to eating our four legged friends so that we can still get the "protein benefits" of meat by eating good quality vegetables.

Look at a recipe like Shepherd's Pie.

Traditionally, it's made with ground beef. but in the description I will give you alternatives to making a traditional Shepherd's Pie into a modern classic that will change your taste buds forever!

I have lited below tradional indgreies in blue and replacement in green

  • ground beef = mushrooms ( black, crimini, shitake ) they are firm "mushrooms" and have a similar texture to meat )
  • ricotta cheese = mashed sweet potatoes, butternut squash
  • milk, cream = vegetable broth ( mineral salts ( Sodium, calcium, potassium )

You can also add chard, kale or riced broccoli to you pie as this will add texture to the meal.

The thing with eating meat is that it's a complete protein. If you want to cut back on "land animals" then it behooves you to find other sources of protein to augment your diet. in Shepherd's Pie. Adding lentils or a dense bean like white beans or cannellini beans can be an excellent replacement for protein.

To pique your curiosity, go online and see what other people have used to replace meat in their dishes. 

You don't have to eliminate meat entirely from your diet. But, having good alternatives can keep your palate fresh and open you to new methods of cooking.
