Osteoporosis: Strength Considerations

Some of the keys to managing a condition like osteoporosis is to first figure out what are the main things inhibiting your movement and then finding a Physical therapy to teach you movement and home therapeutics and when your done with them find a local fitness professional to help you get into a structured fitness program. This fitness professional should be able to design a program unique to your current physical state.

Coordinating with a physical therapist to discuss if there are any outstanding issues that need to be addressed so that when designing a program these areas can be focused upon in a workout.

One of the first things a fitness professional should do is perform these items in the order listed below:

  • Health / Fitness questionnaire
  • Body composition assessment:to assess body fat, muscle and water
  • Fitness assessment: strength, aerobic, range of motion

A health questionnaire would describe your past health history and present aliments. This helps to get an understanding of the overall heath patterns of a client

The body composition consists of using the InBody 270 an accurate way of determining one's weight and the make up of that weight such as the ratio of muscle, fat, water and bone density.

The fitness assessment helps determine the overall condition of the client and where they rank against established measures such  as that of upper body strength i.e. push ups and lower body strength i.e squats

Once all these aspects are performed and reviewed a fitness profile can be determined and a course of action can then be implemented in helping you reach your fitness goals.

Osteoporosis can be slowed down but not reversed. There is a tipping point but that is determined more by the lifestyle and actions an individual takes to manage their health properly that will ultimately determine their health outcomes.
