How to Train Effectively during the Winter months.

Well, we are coming to the end of the year 2021. We have experienced a lot of changes and there is still some uncertainty concerning how we all will fare this winter season, particularly as it relates to  "colds "and " flu"

The best remedy to address an individual's risk for developing respiratory illness is to strive to maintain a fitness level that is functional and user friendly. Exercise is usually the best medicine to help you overcome any chances of having a respiratory or physical body breakdown.

In this recent article in the British Journal of Medicine, it states upon literature review that increasing the aerobic capacity cof your lungs can help reduce your risk for upper respiratory infection. In relation to Covid, the study followed patients who had cases of Covid 19. They wer then ask ? as to how often they were active both pre pandemic and during the pandemic. it seems that those patients who lead an active lifestyle fared much better in their recovery that those patients that did not "live an active lifestyle".

It seems rather prudent that instead of closing gyms we should be opening more and getting more people out in the world exercising more, primarily a cardio based workout in excess of 15 minute with a sustained heart rate between 125 - 178 can increase these factors:

  • O2 capacity
  • Increase lung conditioning
  • decrease fatigue
  • faster post exercise recovery
  • lower resting heart rate
  • enhance immune response

 

These positive finding illustrate how exercise should be a component of any respiratory health program to help people minimize their risk for and also be prophylactic to help people recover once in a symptomatic period.
