Hello Next Levelers,
There has been a for some time in the media and around health circles in general on the benefits of taking nutritional supplements. There are pro's and con's to taking supplements. But the main goal of taking supplements is to make up a deficiency in our diets as a result of not consuming the necessary nutrients required to sustain a healthy and productive life.
I have taken supplements on and off for years. Overall ,I take some supplements on a regular basis: Vitamin C, B-Complex, Vitamin E, beta carotene, zinc.
These products are beneficial in reducing oxidative damage to our cells. Oxidation is when "Free radicals" unpaired electrons "poke" holes in our cell walls and create leakage of unwanted materials into the cells which can cause inflammation. Cut an apple and let it stand for a few minutes. After awhile, you'll notice that it begins to brown. That is "oxidation" when the skin is not cut it doesn't get brown. Hence the benefit of taking supplements in particular anti-oxidant based nutrition is to prevent being "rancid".
The above listed products are the basis for maintaining an anti-oxidant regimen to maintain cellular health.
Eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables coupled with an active lifestyle and taking as insurance nutritional supplements, can be beneficial in helping you to minimize your risk for illness and maximize your efforts in the gym
When buying supplements not all or created equal. Here are some things to look at:
- Know why you need them: not eating enough foods in their raw state. Or your Doctor recommends?
- Brush up on your label reading skills: make sure there aren't any unnecessary ingredients or additives
- Avoid mega doses and extra ingredients: Depending on your needs stick with the recommended dosage unless otherwise recommended by your doctor
- Choose a respected brand: Look at these sites to determine quality supplements: Consumer Labs, The U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention, or NSF International.
I tend to stay away from store bought supplements. I prefer to order form online highly reputable companies:
Hope this helps. Ask if you have ?.
