Hello Friends,
We all exercise to lose weight and build muscle. But new research is now finding that fitness also builds new brain tissue. As a result, we may be boosting our health by 50%. The goal as always is to build a stronger body. Now there is evidence that brain function can improve and we can approach our training a little bit differently.
Exercise is known to reduce stress ,depression and anxiety if performed on a regular consistent basis. It's benefits are just as effective as :
- antidepressants
- psychotherapy
Exercise, due to increase oxygen in the brain causes the lungs to expand, as a result of aerobic activity ( activities > than 2 min ) brings more oxygen to your brain therefore providing
- increase energy
- focus
- attention
Therefore the best way to incorporate exercise is to plan for it during the week to months and be consistent.
Simple ways to boost brain health
The simplest is Walking. In 2019, a study published in the Scientific American performed a test on 1200 people and asked them to walk briskly for 2 minutes. Upon stopping, they performed tests that quantified their memory, reasoning and sharpness. The walkers who walked the fastest had the best retention of the aforementioned criteria.
Research now favors the theory that when humans evolved into bipedal creatures and our need to search for food in the form of protein and fats ( animals ) rather than eating an agrarian lifestyle ( fruits and roots ). Being upright we adapted so our lungs moved move vertically ( against gravity ) it forced more oxygen into our brains and as a result increased the brain with oxygen that simulated more brain cells which allowed humans to "think" fast and clearer and develop strategies to provide shelter and food to build civilization.
Prevention of Early onset brain dysfunction.
A study in 2017 and 2019 in the Journal of Alzheimers Disease found that patients who had early onset Alzheimers and introduced walking, where able to improve their short term memory and reduce atrophy in the hippocampus. The area of the brain most associated with memory. It also determined that "beta amyloid" a tissue that is found "scarring" the hippocampus. was reduced therefore limiting the damage to the memory cells in the brain.
All it takes is .....
8-21 minutes to get the brain benefits associated with exercise. It behooves you to plan out your program and as best as possible be consistent in performing aerobic based activities on a weekly to monthly basis. It can make a world of difference to you physically and in the long term mentally.
