Many people have a tendency to put on extra weight during the holiday season. In our sedentary culture, where more than a 1/3 of the population is dealing with some amount of "excess weight" The winter season can contribute markedly to how you are able to control your lifestyle during this most festive time of the year. Those extra pounds may stay around year after year. If you aren't mindful of what you are eating and not doing the most of: exercise
Increase in weight can lead to these conditions:
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
If you have a tendency to gain weight during the holiday season . It behooves you to begin to make a plan or at least create a strategy to tackle this holiday problem head on. By analysing your diet and making simple changes you can make a huge impact on your health as you navigate the holiday season..
Below I have outlined some action points that can help you "figure it out"
1. Make a holiday fitness plan.
The holidays can mean less time to exercise due to a # of things such as :
- getting dark earlier
- holiday parties
- loneliness
- travel
- away from family
Solution: Get out your calendar and start planning parties, get togethers with friends, travel arrangements and make time to spend with family a priority. If you plan at least 2 months ahead of the events listed you can have the peace of mind of knowing that there is a bit of "order" to your holiday season.
Solution: Now that you have a plan of events over the ensuing weeks. It makes sense for us to now plan our fitness activities accordingly. If you liked doing outdoor "stuff" and if the dark weather is preventing you from doing these activities. Move your fitness indoors. Look for a community center, a YMCA or work with a fitness professional that has a facility that is safe and can provide you with a structured fitness program to help you keep the weight off.
Solution: Eat defensively. Try and avoid munching and drinking just because " its there" and if at work or a party you don't want to be "rude".
Be aware that some of us are very susceptible to light. As the it gets darker earlier some people can experience depression as a result of less light from the sun. This is a condition called "seasonal affective disorder" (SAD). If you notice that your:
- sleeping more
- lethargic
- increased appetite
- cravings for carbohydrates and sweets
you may be experiencing a form of depression, known as (SAD) as noted above.
By and large the most effective method to controlling seasonal bouts of apathy and depression is getting involved in a fitness workout. Stretching, aerobic and strength training are all essential components to building a healthier you.
