Unbeknownst to many, women are at risk for developing and having stressors which can affect their hearts and lead to life changing and altering affects. It is prudent for us to not only understand what leads to heart attacks in women but most importantly how can we ( and I hope we never too !) know when a loved one is in the throes of an episode.
A heart attack is when one of the arteries that supplies the heart with oxygen gets closed off and starves the heart. This blockage can occur due too:
- Diet: poor food choice, irregular eating times, skipping meals
- Stress: work, relationships
- Metabolic: diabetes, liver
Here are some statistics from ( Heart & Stroke Report 2018 ):
78% of heart attacks are missed in women
a majority of research is done on Men, therefore the metrics are off by gender
electrocardiograms, Blood tests are based on studies on men
Due to inadequate sign and symptoms most women:
are missed diagnosed as having heart burn or anxiety
As you can attest these missed opportunities to diagnosis and evaluate probably leads to unfortunate trauma.
Here are some signs and symptoms of a Heart Attack
- Paleness or Clammy Skin
- Shortness of Breath
- Heart Flutter
- Cold Sweat
- Unusal Fatigue
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Shoulder, Neck, Jaw, Arm or Back pain
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Inability to Sleep
- Abdominal Pain
One of the main difference between men and women in regards to Heart Attacks is that women don't experience "chest pressure". So don't always think of male based symptoms as similar to females. if you feel or suspect that you're having a heart attack take 160 milligrams of aspirin and Call 911!
More research needs to be done on Heart Attacks and women's health. That way we can better understand causation and find meaningful remedies to solving this problem. The main thing is be aware of how you body is feeling and if something doesn't feel right . it usually isn't.
CPR
In the event you are in a situation where you can help save someones life here are some procedures to help you accomplish this:
- Call 911
- Lay the person on their back
- Check that the airway is clear
- Put the heel of your hand on the center of their chest. Place your other hand on top of the first. Push down hard and fast ( 100/minutes at 2 in deep compression ) until help arrives
