How does "Oxygen Debt" help you lose weight!!

Oxygen Debt what is it and how can it help me to change my body.

Definition of oxygen debt

a cumulative deficit of oxygen available for oxidative metabolism that develops during periods of intense bodily activity and must be made good when the body returns to rest

 

How is that applicable to my exercise? Well, to sum it up look at this video.

Like running, hiking, biking or any endeavor that involves cardio. Oxygen debt is when you are stressing your cardio respiratory system and there is a slight deficit between oxygen uptake and utilization between the heart and lungs.

The most simplest explanation of oxygen debt is when the intensity of the cardio activity is leaning you to be " huffing and puffing ".  You shouldn't be "gasping for air" but there should be few seconds to minutes that  your body is able to adjust and your heart and lungs can be in sync without "labored" breathing.

As uncomfortable that this type of training can be it is the best way for you to burn stored energy.

I'm not talking about just fat but mostly all "stored energy" namely fats and carbohydrates. Most carbohydrates are stored in our muscles and the liver. After 20 - 30 minutes of moderate activity your sugars are diminished and your fats are then used in the form of free fatty acids ( triglycerides ) that are fat molecules that are broken down into smaller parts for easier consumption by your cells for energy.

Therefore, the more you're in an "oxygen debt" state the more likely you will be able to catabolize energy in your body. In particular your stored fats will be used as fuel, which over time will lead to "weight loss".

With "oxygen debt" you can't skimp on eating. Diet's aren't going to work to lose weight if you restrict calories. You need calories in order for "oxygen debt"  to work.

Having a heart rate monitor is great way for you to check your heart rate to determine exactly what number range gets you into the state of labored breathing. Anything is better than using your fingers! A monitor is direct and to the point and gives you instant feedback so that you can adjust your efforts.

In Summary:

  1. Oxygen debt is a state in which you are huffing and puffing and there is deficit between oxygenated blood entering your heart for body utilization.
  2. Fueling your body is the key to supporting this effort. Don't skip meals!
  3. Use a heart monitor to determine what your training zones are and do you best to challenge yourself in these zones.
