Hello Potential Next Levelers,

I want to talk about how you should be your own biggest cheerleader. How to be your own best health advocate.

All of us should have access to a healthcare provider who we can ask questions concerning our health. The best way to have a meaningful relationship with a provider is to be a "health advocate" for yourself. 

This doesn't mean being a confrontational patient but rather a "proactive" patient. the more engaged you are in your health the more aware you become about your overall well being.

Listed below are some conversation starters with your doctor:

  1. Are there any evaluations that I need to have?
  2. How often should I get a physical?
  3. Are there any things I should be concerned about when taking these prescribed medications?
  4. Are there any potential health factors I'm at risk of developing?

Staying on top of your own personal and (your family) can make your navigation through our complex healthcare system become more user friendly and less intimidating to you as you find your voice. Knowing what your health insurance covers can me beneficial in helping you to plan for out of pocket expenses.

This is but a simple sample of topics you should and can talk to your doctor about. Most of us have more than one health care provider that we may be dealing with such as  a nutritionist, chiropractor, massage therapist. Keeping them in the loop as to what everyone else is doing can help you move forward in unison minimizing any hiccups.

Adding to the list as a "health advocate" is you advocating for yourself by becoming more active. Only by exercising and eating a well balanced diet can we achieve overall health that reduces our risk factors for developing some of the more common health maladies such as diabetes, heart disease, and being overweight.

In summary, by staying informed and update on your health and health information. when it comes time to make rational decisions you'll have the tools and support to have the best outcome.
