We all like to travel and visit family or new places. What we don't like is getting an illness or injury and having to spend the vacation in bed or even worse the hospital! Below are 10 tips for you to consider before and during your vacation to reduce your risk for getting an illness or injury
- Have a pre trip medical assessment by your doctor. Make sure your immunizations are up to date.
- Register with MedicAlert.org to have access to resources for particular conditions you may have.
- Eat a well based diet, hydrate properly (at least 4-6 8oz glasses of water) and get at least 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
- Exercise moderately while on vacation i.e walking, hiking, swimming, biking. Your on vacation enjoy it!
- Wash your hands frequently and often. Carry some hand sanitizer with you in case you don't have acess to water.
- Wear sunscreen on hot sunny days.
- Be aware of changes in your physical status, if something doesn't feel right, then it may be something brewing. Don't take risk!
- Pack first aid kits i.e bandaids, bandages, antiseptic, anti microbial, cold pack, gloves, tweezers, thermometer.
- Bring anti inflammatory, pain modulation, anti histamine tablets or liquids and asthma inhalers
- If your diabetic have your glucose tablets, glucose monitor and drinks available in case you can't get to food.
I'm sure we can add more to this list, but the main point is that you begin to prepare yourself for all the possibilities that COULD HAPPEN while away trying to enjoy yourself on a much needed break.
